Plea is the stage at which an accused person is asked in court to respond whether he is guilty or not guilty to an alleged crime that has been read to him. It is this response of the accused person of either “I am guilty” or “I am not guilty” that is called the plea. Other acceptable pleas are "not guilty by reason of insanity", and "no contest or nolo contendere".

A defendant can enter a plea of guilty, not guilty, no contest, (in the United States) Alford plea or (in the United Kingdom) no case to answer.
