Criminal law is a body of law which defines offences and also stipulates punishments for them. It may also be defined as a body of law which seeks to protect the collective interest of a community against certain behaviors or conducts that threaten their communal existence e.g. murder, rape, armed robbery and so on.

Most criminal cases do not have limitation period or time limit. A crime committed many years ago may still be prosecuted, if there is still evidence to prove it.
