A conviction is a finding of guilt made against an accused person before punishment is imposed. In determining the fate of an accused person, at the point of delivering a judgement, a court's judgement is usually in two parts. One aspect will pronounce the guilt of the accused person while the second part will pronounce the nature of punishment whether fine, imprisonment or death to be imposed. The first part is otherwise known as conviction and the next stage is called "sentencing".
