It is the act of completing a marriage with the first act of sexual intercourse after a wedding ceremony. Failure to have the first act of sexual intercourse after the wedding ceremony, especially if it does not take place, say a year after, is a ground to seek for dissolution of marriage.

However, there may not be a basis for dissolution if the lack of consummation is as a result of the agreement of the couple. On the other hand, if a spouse is ready and willing for consummation and the other is refusing and it continues for some time, the party who is willing may file for dissolution of the marriage.
