Citation is the method by which lawyers provide to the court a reference of cases which they are relying on in respect of cases they handle before that court.

For example, a reference to a case as “Onuoha v. State” is incomplete unless the following additional information “(1998) 13 NWLR Pt. 583, 531” is provided which is actually the citation of the referred case.
