Bar is a professional organization to represent lawyers as an association. The origin of the term bar is from the barring furniture dividing a medieval European courtroom, therefore, the word “bar” may equally be used to describe where lawyers sit and stand to address a judge in a court-room, so that the case at bar means "the case under argument".

It may also be used in relation to a ceremony where newly qualified lawyers are formally admitted into the league of their professional colleagues.
Newly-qualified lawyers are being called to the Bar today.
