Bail is the act of releasing a person alleged to have committed a crime temporarily in exchange for an amount of money. When the bail is set, the person will be released while investigation, trial or appeal is on-going and the bail is the insurance for his appearance in such proceedings; bail is forfeited if the defendant fails to appear.
